Learning Quran online: what to know before you start

Over the last few years, online Quran teaching has gone from a convenient alternative to the first choice for Muslim families living in the West. There are not enough qualified teachers in most cities, masjid classes are often large and infrequent, and driving children across town after school is exhausting. What a good online Quran class looks like

The student and the teacher meet on a video call at a fixed time. The teacher shares the page of the Qaida or Quran on screen, points to each word, recites it and then listens to the student repeat it. Mistakes in makhraj (the point of articulation of a letter) or tajweed are corrected immediately, and the student repeats the word until it is right. A 30-minute class typically covers a short revision, the new lesson, and a two-minute recap. For children, the teacher mixes in quick quizzes and praise; for adults, the pace is faster and questions are encouraged. After the class, the teacher records what was covered and what to practice.

Choosing between Qaida, Nazra, Tajweed and Hifz

Almost every student who cannot yet read Arabic starts with Noorani Qaida. It teaches the letters, their shapes at the start, middle and end of words, the vowel marks and how letters join. From there, students move into Quran reading (Nazra), where they recite from the mushaf page by page while the teacher builds fluency and introduces tajweed rules naturally. Students who can already read but want to perfect their recitation join the Tajweed course. Memorization, or Hifz, is best started once reading is fluent. Learners who want to understand what they recite continue with Tafseer and Quranic Arabic.

How long it takes

With three classes a week, most children complete Noorani Qaida in four to six months and most adults in three to four. Reading the complete Quran with basic tajweed typically takes 12 to 18 months for children and 9 to 12 months for adults. Memorizing the full Quran usually takes three to five years with daily classes. These are averages from our own students; your teacher will give you a personal estimate after the trial classes.

What to look for in an online Quran academy
